She was Brian's mother. She wasn't Brian.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

For years, our family struggled with Joyce.<\/p>

Joyce was the mother of Brian\u2014the man who shot Kevin.<\/p>

Although Joyce had not committed the crime, our anger toward Brian affected the way we treated her. We avoided her, even though we attended the same church.<\/p>

At the time, it probably felt justified.<\/p>

Looking back, we see it differently.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

An unexpected conversation<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

A documentary project about Kevin’s story eventually created an opportunity for Joyce to be interviewed.<\/p>

That conversation opened a door that had been closed for years.<\/p>

Kevin began talking with Joyce. Other members of the family did as well.<\/p>

And slowly, something changed.<\/p>

We began to see Joyce not as an extension of Brian, but as a mother who had her own pain.<\/p>

She loved her son.<\/p>

She also cared about Kevin.<\/p>

Those two realities could exist at the same time.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The apology<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Eventually, our family had to acknowledge that we had treated Joyce unfairly.<\/p>

She had not shot Kevin.<\/p>

She had not made the decision that changed his life.<\/p>

She had simply become connected to the person who had.<\/p>

That realization led to apologies and reconciliation.<\/p>

What had once been avoidance became conversation.<\/p>

Conversation became friendship.<\/p>

Kevin, Kris, Diane, and Joyce began spending time together, including lunches and other gatherings. The relationship that seemed impossible years earlier became genuine. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It reaches people who weren’t responsible.<\/p>

It changes relationships.<\/p>

It creates walls.<\/p>

And eventually, someone has to decide whether those walls will remain.<\/p>

For our family, Joyce became part of the lesson.<\/p>

We learned that reconciliation requires humility.<\/p>

It requires admitting when our own response has become unhealthy.<\/p>

And sometimes it requires sitting down with someone we would rather avoid and simply listening.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The relationship with Joyce became one of the early steps in Kevin’s larger forgiveness journey.<\/p>

It reminded us that forgiveness doesn’t always arrive dramatically.<\/p>

Sometimes it begins with a conversation.<\/p>

Sometimes it begins with an apology.<\/p>

And sometimes it begins when we finally see another person as a human being instead of as a symbol of the person who hurt us.<\/p>

That is what happened with Joyce.<\/p>
