A wheelchair is only what people see.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

After Kevin was shot, our family had to learn an entirely new way of living.<\/p>

Kevin needed help with many ordinary parts of daily life.<\/p>

Getting dressed.<\/p>

Eating.<\/p>

Transferring.<\/p>

Traveling.<\/p>

Managing medical issues.<\/p>

Getting in and out of bed.<\/p>

Going to appointments.<\/p>

Dealing with infections and hospital stays.<\/p>

These things became part of the family’s reality.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t

Kris grew up alongside caregiving<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Kevin’s sister Kris became deeply involved in his care.<\/p>

She was young when the shooting happened, and caregiving became part of her life at an age when most teenagers are focused on very different responsibilities.<\/p>

Over the years, she learned what Kevin needed and became one of the people he depended on most.<\/p>

But caregiving wasn’t limited to one person.<\/p>

Family members learned.<\/p>

Friends learned.<\/p>

Eventually, Kevin’s nieces and nephews learned.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t

To the children, Kevin was simply Uncle Kevin<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Kevin’s nieces and nephews grew up with him in a wheelchair.<\/p>

To them, it wasn’t unusual.<\/p>

They knew Kevin was their uncle first.<\/p>

They learned how to help him drink and eat. They learned how to position utensils. Jack eventually learned how to transfer Kevin between his bed and wheelchair.<\/p>

That is one of the most beautiful parts of Kevin’s story.<\/p>

His disability didn’t make him separate from his family.<\/p>

His family learned how to live life with him.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The importance of community<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The same thing eventually happened with Kevin’s friends.<\/p>

The Road Dawgs learned how to help with his physical needs, including transfers, making it possible for Kevin to travel with them.<\/p>

That kind of help isn’t always visible.<\/p>

People see Kevin at a concert.<\/p>

They see him at a football game.<\/p>

They see him traveling.<\/p>

They see him announcing a basketball game.<\/p>

They don’t necessarily see the preparation required to make those experiences possible.<\/p>

But Kevin’s family and friends did.<\/p>

And they refused to let those challenges keep him from participating in life.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Kevin's life was not a prison<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

One of the most important themes in the manuscript is that Kevin refused to allow his wheelchair to become a prison.<\/p>

He attended concerts, sporting events, restaurants, movies, and other activities. He eventually became a basketball announcer and coached youth flag football.<\/p>

The wheelchair created limitations.<\/p>

But it did not eliminate possibility.<\/p>

That is what caregiving taught our family.<\/p>

Sometimes loving someone means doing the practical things they cannot do for themselves.<\/p>

But it also means helping them do the things they can<\/strong> do.<\/p>

Kevin didn’t need people to live his life for him.<\/p>
